The Sailors got back on to Lake Jindabyne on Wednesday 17th February after the Dragon boaters and swimmers took over the lake on the weekend. The weather fined up for the sailors and a steady 12 to 15 knot breeze was blowing from the south. Peter and Sabine Hickling took on the starting boat duties for the first time setting a challenging port rounding course. The four cats and three mono-hulls got off to a clean start and headed for the quarry mark. The next leg saw the cats on a long square run to the mountain mark. They all stayed together and were in a tight huddle at the mark rounding after which they split into pairs. Martin Van Weel on his mosquito and Tim Symons on his Hobie 17 had a close, fast drag race on the long windward leg back to the bay mark with both sailors hanging from the trapeze wire and keeping the boats speeding along. Meanwhile Barry Dennis and Ross Tattersall on the Hobie 16 battled just as ferociously with Matt Mason on his Hobie 17. Tim managed to get slightly ahead of Martin and was able to slip away when Martin capsized at the quarry mark. He quickly righted his boat and chased Tim around the rest of the 5 lap course. Tim kept his lead over Martin to the end and Matt finally got ahead of Barry on the last long windward leg. The handicap adjusted placings gave Martin the win by 8 seconds from Tim, Barry and Matt. In the mono-hulls race it took a few legs for Phil Daley and Tony Hasaart on the Flying Fifteen to get ahead of Steve Osborne on his laser and Ross Lawley on the OK dinghy but they kept stretching their lead all the way around the course. Steve’s capsize hrlped Phil and Tony get away from the other competitors. The handicap adjusted positions agreed with the finishing places on the water of Phil first, Steve second and Ross third. All the sailors enjoyed a fast and furious race around the full five lap course and appreciated the barbeque dinner afterwards at the clubhouse.
