In just their second season, the Cooma Titans have claimed their first piece of silverware after securing a 35-run win in the Monaro District Cricket Association Snow FM T20 grand final.
The Titans made amends for their loss in last year’s T20 decider against Berridale with a dominant performance in Sunday’s final at Rotary Oval.
The Titans delivered a clinical bowling display to restrict Jindabyne to 9/128 in their pursuit of the Titans 9/163.
Despite Jindabyne quick, Simon Partell, claiming a hat-trick and four wickets in six balls to rip through the Titans middle order, the homeside posted 168.
The Titans batting effort was led by Aqib Abassi, one of the competition’s most destructive batters. Abassi cleared the rope three times and hit seven fours on his way to 68 off 43 balls.
As wickets fell around him, Abassi continued his quick scoring to guide the Titans to a competitive toal.
He and captain, Hassan Nawaz, put on 101 for the second wicket.
Nawaz fell for 45 off 44 balls, the first of Partell’s hat-trick wickets. Nawaz, another of the Monaro’s leading batters, hit 382 runs across his seven innings in the T20 competition.
Partell almost had a double hat-trick before claiming his fourth wicket in six balls.
Jindabyne’s bowlers were led by Partell 4/17 off four overs and spinner, Lucas Rixon 1/15 off four overs. Jindabyne took 9/47 during the final eight overs.
In their run chase, Jindabyne lost two early wickets when Partell was caught and Liam Robinson run-out. Rixon and Dave Tickell steadied the innings, working hard against tight Titans bowling.
Requiring 111 off the last 10 overs, Jindabyne tried to up the scoring.
Rixon top scored with 45 off 51 balls, while James Joyce provided some hope towards the end with 28 off 21 balls.
For the Cooma side, Abassi was the pick of the bowlers, snaring 2/23 off four overs. His efforts with bat and ball earned him player of the final honours.
The Tigers won through to the grand final after starting the weekend in third spot on the ladder. All Monaro sides played in Cooma on Saturday with Berridale, Titans, Jindabyne and Rhythm all a chance of reaching the final.
The Titans win over Berridale secured their spot, and Jindabyne’s win over Coffey’s saw them jump ahead of Berridale into second.
