A piece of Cooma history has been restored, with the owner keen to gather more information.
An FJ Holden panel van, which was the original van from the Sunicrust Bakery at 50 Bombala Street, Cooma in the 1960s, was purchased by Queensland man Dan Booth.
“I purchased the FJ Holden from Flynn’s Wrecking Yard in 2002,” Mr Booth said.
“The only information I have is from Jim Flynn when I bought the van.
“From what I remember the van was caught in the floods in about 1959, washed off the road or something like that. After that it was parked up and never got back on the road. Then it eventually ended up in the wrecking yard.
“I’ve been trying to find information and photos about the car and bakery through the Monaro Historical Society with no joy.”
According to Susan Peters-Smith (nee Eastaway), some of the Sunicrust Bakery staff are still living in Cooma.
“Eastaway’s Friendly Bakery was opened in 1956 where 123 Coffee House is now,” Mrs Peters-Smith said.
“They then moved to Kosciusko Bakery on Bombala Street in 1960, which then became Sunicrust.”
The van has recently been restored, with a new paint job including the sign writing.
