The Bombala community has thrown its support behind a new oncology unit in Cooma with more than $3000 raised to support the Monaro Committee for Cancer Research’s push for the new facility.

Bombala Rotary Club members showed their commitment by holding a bumper street stall. The club generously donated the entire proceeds, $3100, to the mcCr to help the group achieve its goal of a new, free standing cancer unit at Cooma Hospital.

The new unit is to replace the existing ward in the Cooma Hospital as the service now requires additional space due to growth in demand. It will be constructed on the grounds of the Cooma Hospital and will provide modern treatment facilities for patients across the Monaro.

“We were thrilled when the Rotary Club offered to dedicate the street stall proceeds to the new centre,” local volunteer, Anne Caldwell, said.

“The Cooma unit is very convenient for treatment rather than having to travel further afield.”

The street stall was successful thanks to the large contribution of items for sale and the traditional home cooked cakes and slices provided by the local community.

“The wood raffle at the street stall is always a great success and we thank Brent Wilton for his continuing donation of the wood for the raffle,” Rotary president, Martin Ryan, said.

“I also need to recognise the Bombala Lions Club members for stepping in to support the stall on the day, it was a great example of our service clubs joining forces for a good cause.”

Bombala Rotary recently hosted stall organisers at a dinner in thanks for their support.

“There is no doubt it was the support of the whole community that delivered the great result,” Rotary president, Ryan, said.
