In a heartwarming recognition of community spirit, Origin Energy installed a 25-kilowatt solar battery worth approximately $30,000 for John McLoughlin, affectionately known as Postman John, ahead of the official Christmas light reveal on Friday, 28 November.

This generous gesture follows his 37 years of illuminating Jindabyne with a stunning display that has brought joy to residents and visitors alike throughout the festive season.

For decades, John and his wife, Doreen, have transformed their home into a festive wonderland, and each December their elaborate display becomes a beloved attraction. Despite the joy they spread, the McLoughlin’s faced escalating power bills, leading John to reach out to multiple electricity companies over the last decade, seeking recognition and support for the electricity costs incurred by their seasonal display.

“I’ve been an Origin customer for 56 years, and for the last ten years, I’ve asked them for some relief,” Postman John said.

“All I wanted was a small bit of recognition for what I do each year, when they told me they were installing a 25-kilowatt battery, I nearly went through the roof. It means the world to me.”

The battery installation took place on Wednesday 26 November, ensuring that John’s festive lights can shine without further burdening their electricity bills, allowing them to continue their tradition of spreading holiday cheer without financial stress.

The 80-year-old local legend is on his energy tech journey, using smart solar and battery installations to dial up the sparkle whilst keeping costs manageable. He’s set to save more than $2000 each year on his bills from a 65 per cent reduction in energy usage.

“I would have been thrilled with a $200 bill reduction, this donation from Origin is beyond my wildest dreams,” Postman John said.

Origin Energy’s decision to support John is not only a nod to his unwavering dedication but also a commitment to supporting local communities.

“As a long-time Origin customer and much-loved member of the Jindabyne community, we are thrilled to be helping John power his famous annual festive lights display with the installation of a 25kWh home battery,” Origin customer and community champion, Lydia Lobb, said.

“The new battery will more than halve John’s energy bill, saving him around $2000 a year - helping to boost his festive lights display and keep his energy bills in check.”

The festive lights have become a cherished tradition in Jindabyne, encouraging families to come together and celebrate the holiday season.

While the recognition is a significant milestone for John, it also raises awareness of the broader issues surrounding energy costs for families, especially those who take on additional expenses to support community initiatives.

“It’s gratifying to see that our efforts haven’t gone unnoticed,” John said.

Origin has partnered with The Salvation Army, providing $25,000 to support Australians who need it most this festive season through the Light the Way campaign.

By connecting John and the Jindabyne community with the Salvo’s Light the Way campaign, Cooma Salvo’s representatives said, “we’re able to help make this go further, thanks to John’s generosity and community donations”.

John McLoughlin’s connection to his community and his relentless spirit to bring joy through his Christmas light display have finally earned him the recognition he deserves.

Thanks to Origin Energy’s generous contribution, the McLoughlin’s can continue their beloved tradition without the worry of a high electricity bill, lighting up the Jindabyne community and reminding everyone of the true spirit of Christmas.
