Despite previously saying he would not run for mayor, Cr Chris Hanna has again been elected mayor after contesting today's vote.

Cr Hanna told this masthead last week he would not stand for mayor again, however at the meeting held this afternoon in the Cooma office council chambers, he accepted a nomination from Cr Bob Stewart to stand for the top job.

Cr Hanna was elected ahead of Cr Tanya Higgins, Cr Andrew Thaler and Cr Luke Williamson.

In a close vote, Cr Hanna received five votes to Cr Higgins' four. There were two informal votes.

The mayoral contest went to a third round of voting. In the first round, Cr Hanna and Higgins received four votes, Cr Thaler collected two votes and Cr Williamson received one vote.

In the second round of voting, Cr Higgins and Hanna again received four votes and Cr Thaler received three.

In contest for deputy mayor, Cr Higgins was elected ahead of Cr Thaler eight votes to three. Cr Tricia Hopkins, the previous deputy, did not contest the position.

Councillors undertook both votes under a secret ballot method.
