When Lynley Miners answered a call to help with the barriers at the Adaminaby Races in the 1980s, little did he know this would lead to a 45 year involvement with the Adaminaby Jockey club.
A call from local trainer and family friend, Richard McGufficke, asking Lynley if he could spare some time on race day has turned into quite the stint with the jockey club.
Lynley spent 30 years on barrier duty before joining the committee. Upon joining, he quickly became the Adaminaby Jockey Club president, a role he has proudly served ever since.
“I love being part of the club and the races are so important for town,” Lynley said.
“During the late 1980s and early 90s, the club was struggling. The efforts of a few, including Jim and Jenny Madden rejuvenated the club.”
Lynley’s family has a long and proud history in the Adaminby district. The owner of Miners Transport Adaminaby, he is well-known for his community pursuits, although often too modest to talk about them.
In his role as Adaminaby Jockey Club president, Lynley has helped the races become one of the biggest events in the region. The Adaminaby Races are held in high regard locally and by the thousands who travel from Canberra, Riverina, Victoria and even further afield to attend the country picnic races.
“The racecourse is a great setting. The scenery and buildings all add to the race day experience,” Lynley said.
“The races are a family orientated event, there’s plenty for the kids to do.
“It’s such a special event for our small town. About 1500 people come to town for the weekend, it helps all the businesses and accommodation providers.”
Lynley said a highlight each race day is the club’s theme. This year - pints, prize and ponies is the theme - celebrating the town’s irish connection.
A strong six race program is expected with the feature race being the Snowy Hydro Adaminaby Cup.
“We have great support from businesses. Snowy Hydro, Future Generation Joint Venture, Leed and Orica are all big supporters.”
Come join Lynley on Saturday, 22 November for one of the best days of the year in Adaminaby.
