The Snowy Monaro Rural Fire Service (RFS) is urging landholders and residents to remain vigilant as the region faces extreme fire conditions until Sunday, 11 January.
Snowy Monaro RFS Operational Officer, Tom Phillips, is calling on landholders to avoid undertaking hot works with temperatures predicted to reach 36 degrees on Thursday, 37 degrees on Friday and 35 on Saturday.
“We want landholders to withhold from hot works, we know business is crucial but please ensure you’re avoiding welding and grinding where possible,” Mr Phillips said.
“Please continue refraining from undertaking any hot works/mowing or slashing in open areas, together with keeping hot vehicle exhausts away from areas of dry grasses, so no fires are unnecessarily started.
Mr Phillips is asking landholders to check their properties following widespread lightning strikes across the region.
“We urge all rural landholders to check their properties after lightning. We have had a lightning ignition start a fire more recently in the Numbla Vale area (under control),” Mr Phillips said.
"We are seeing lightning in the environment.”
Mr Phillips said conditions are expected to deteriorate on Friday and Saturday with an extreme fire danger rating possible.
“The team here is focussed on Friday into Saturday. More importantly if we can manage ignitions now until Saturday that will be in our favour,” he said.
“We would like ask all community members of the Snowy Monaro, and those visiting the region to remain aware of the current fire risk conditions.”
All fire permits have been suspended until midnight Sunday.
