Two men have been charged after allegedly attempting to use a drone to deliver drugs and other contraband into a Cooma correctional facility.

About 1.10pm Friday 25 September, officers attached to the Monaro Police District were notified to reports of a drone flying in prohibited airspace above a correctional facility in Cooma.

Following inquiries, police attended a nearby park on Barrack Street, where they located and spoke with two men, aged 31 and 38.

During a search of the men and a nearby vehicle, officers allegedly located a drone box and controller, mobile phones, and SIM cards.

Following inquiries, officers allegedly located and seized a drone with an attached package from a nearby creek.

During a search of the package, police allegedly located and seized an amount of tobacco, prohibited drugs, a mobile phone, and several other items.

The items were seized for forensic examination.

The two men were arrested and taken to Cooma police station, where they were both charged with:

- Operate remotely piloted aircraft within prohibited airspace,

- Unlawfully deliver or attempt to deliver anything to inmate, and

- Supply cannabis over indictable and less than commercial quantity.

They were both refused bail to appear before Bail Division Court 3 on Saturday 26 September.
