THERE will be no shortage of local sides to cheer for come grand final day in Group 16 rugby league following three Snowy Monaro sides booking their spots in the premiership decider.
On a successful day in Eden on Saturday for the Group's qualifying finals, the Cooma Fillies tackle side, Bombala High Heelers league-tag team and Snowy River Bears frst grade outfit delivered their best performances of the season. Each side is into their respective grand finals on Sunday August 25 in Narooma.
The Bears produced their most impressive effort this season to defeat minor premiers Eden 32-22. The club has a chance to win its first, first grade title since 1996.
Captain/coach Josh Hitchins had his chargers ready for the big occasion. Despite conceding the first try, the Bears hit back shortly after and rarely looked like losing the lead.
There were tears of joy from Bears spectators, players and officials as the final siren sounded.
Earlier in the day, the Cooma Fillies accounted for Merimbula-Pambula 22-6 in the women's tackle semi-final. Standout efforts from captain Ruby Barnes, Anissa Porter and Ash Steinke helped lead the side to victory.
The Fillies first try came through a nice short ball from Steinke who put Barnes in for a try. A brilliant solo effort from Sophie Caldwell to strip the ball and then score took the Fillies to a 12-6 lead.
Strong Fillies defence in the second half secured the win. Olivia Giorgiutti scored what would be a final try of the game.
The Fillies face the winner of the Snowy River Bears and Narooma women's tackle game on Sunday in Tathra.
A committed effort from the Bombala High Heelers has taken the side to another grand final.
The High Heelers delivered a patient and resolute performance to win the qualifying final 20-10 over Tathra.
Tathra had defeated the High Heelers once this season, back in round five, but a second win over the minor premiers wasn’t to be as Bombala ran in four tries to two.
Bombala is off to another premiership decider and will meet the winner of Tathra and Eden. The grand final will be held in Narooma on Sunday August 25, kick-off to be confirmed.
High Heelers coach Paul Perkins praised the side for their dedication throughout the tough encounter.
“I'm very proud of the girls. They played good, patient footy and weren’t trying to score off every play,” Perkins said.
“They have really nailed the structure this year. The team didn’t try to overplay their hand. We trusted the process and it worked well.”
