Students from Monaro High School and Bombala High School are celebrating after qualifying for the state athletics championships.

The NSW Combined High Schools Sports Association (NSWCHSSA) Secondary Athletics Championship will be held at Sydney Olympic Park from 9 to 11 September.

Students need to return qualifying results in their own school carnival, then zone and regional carnivals before making it to the state level.

“Getting to state level is an impressive achievement,” Monaro High School principal, James Armitage, said.

“It requires skill, dedication and commitment from the students, but also lots of support from their families. We are proud to have a strong contingent of students going to state this year, and we are particularly proud of their sportsmanship and the respect they show to their fellow competitors.”

There were 15 Monaro High School students who competed at the regional carnival in Wollongong on 14 August, and the below have qualified for the state championship.

Arabella Andrews (15 years) – first in javelin, first in discus

Matilda Wilson (15 years) – second in discus

Chantelle Douglass (16 years) – second in triple jump

Sienna Penn (13 years) – first in high jump, first in triple jump

Emily Payne (13 years) – second in javelin, 200m hurdles

Kurik Nelson (17 years) – second in high jump

Many of the other Monaro High School students placed third and fourth in their events, just missing out on the top two, which is required for qualifying for the state level.

Bombala High School’s year 11 student, Jack Edgecombe, will be heading to Sydney to compete in the 3000m steeple chase event.
