Tayla Wilson loves her cricket. But, upon moving to Cooma a few years ago, she was unable to enjoy the game she loves as there was no women’s cricket setup on the Monaro.
This started to change last year when a series of successful social cricket matches were held, bringing former players and new women to the game.
Come season 2025/26, women’s cricket is ready to take its biggest step in the Snowy Monaro with plans for more fixtures and teams to be established. The women’s cricket program faces an exciting launch on Sunday, 16 November with a social six-a-side smash day.
Players of all abilities are encouraged to form a team or register their interest. Six-a-side matches are designed to be short, sharp and engaging.
Wilson is looking for the season starting and is calling on women to give the game she loves, a go.
“When I first started playing cricket, I had absolutely no idea how to hold a bat or how to bowl, where to stand, too many rules. I turned up to my first ever cricket training and learnt everything I know from those around me,” Wilson said.
“Now, I absolutely love being part of the game and have even found my spot as wicket keeper and encouraging others to join the sport.”
Wilson, who is the Monaro District Cricket Association’s female development officer, was part of the inaugural women’s matches last season and said she is excited to see women’s cricket growing in the region.
“Cricket in the Snowy Monaro I believe is all about fun, learning and community. The upcoming six-a-side smash is the perfect way to get involved, it does not matter whether you’re a beginner, returning player or just curious to try something new,” Wilson said.
“It’s a relaxed, social, and supportive environment where everyone is welcome. The day is about learning together, meeting new friends and full of encouragement and laughter.
“This is just the beginning of women’s cricket in the Snowy Monaro, I would like to encourage our community to get behind it.”
The Monaro women’s six-a-side smash will be held at Nijong Oval. Entry is free, no experience or equipment needed. To register, contact the Monaro District Cricket Association on Facebook or at monarocricket@gmail.com
Wilson said the day is one not to miss.
“With your support, we can grow and expand the women’s game in our region and create more opportunities for local women and girls to experience the joy of cricket,” Wilson said.
