Jindabyne/Adaminaby bowlers off to state finals

The Jindabyne/Adaminaby women’s pennant lawn bowls team has claimed the Southeast Region Division 4 title and will travel to Wollongong to contest the state finals next year. The composite side, assembled from Jindabyne and Adaminaby players, did not drop the ball across the regional campaign, defeating Shoalhaven Heads and then Moruya in a tight final on 25 November. Jindabyne skip, Dell Turner, said the team came together and persevered. “We have a composite team so we could play pennants, you must have eight players, four in each team. We only had six and Adaminaby had six, so we combined last year, but we didn’t go so well in last year’s competition,” Ms Turner said. “Through much training, this year we’ve won the flag and a medal.” The side faced logistical challenges, with no other pennant teams in the Monaro, forcing them to travel down the coast for matches. They played six games in total, with two losses and two draws, before advancing to the final at Narooma on 25 November, where they beat Charles Haven Blues by a large margin and then defeated Moruya by a single point in a thrilling finish. For many involved, the victory marked a historic milestone. “As far as I know, this is the first time Jindabyne has ever won a flag,” Ms Turner said. The win also highlighted the changing nature of the sport in the area, with Adaminaby’s bowling green being closed for several years. This has forced bowlers to head to Cooma and Jindabyne for practise and competition. The players thanked all the team members, who helped get the team into Grade 4 and other team member, Barbara, who handled the scoring and team entries the night before, with the scores and results sent to the region. “Their efforts were essential to the team’s success, and all our members express gratitude for the behind-the-scenes work that made this title a reality,” Ms Turner said. The Jindabyne/Adaminaby squad now looks forward to representing the region in Wollongong next year.
