Rodeo ready to rock

The annual Jindabyne Man from Snowy River Rodeo running since 1943, is set to take place on Sunday, 28 December, and excitement is already building in the community. Despite challenging weather conditions leading into last year’s event, with more than 130mm of rain threatening cancellation, the unwavering commitment of the rodeo committee ensured the event went ahead. The 2024 rodeo attracted a large crowd and a large field of competitors, solidifying its reputation as one of NSW’s premier rodeos. Established nearly a century ago, the Jindabyne Rodeo has become a cornerstone of the region’s summer festivities. This year, organisers are focused not just on putting on a thrilling show, but also on improving the experience for both spectators and participants. “We understand the challenges posed by weather and logistics, but our commitment to the rodeo and the community drives us to enhance it every year,” Jindabyne Rodeo Committee member, Allan Rowson, said. The committee has taken proactive steps following feedback from last year’s event. Attendees noted the lack of restrooms, prompting the decision to bring in portable toilets for convenience. In addition, the food service area is undergoing a significant transformation. The barbecue will be relocated to the nearby football oval, and the introduction of more food vendors will establish a food court atmosphere, allowing for faster service and greater variety. Mr Rowson said by expanding the food options and creating more space, the aim is to enhance the overall experience while maintaining a vibrant atmosphere. Financial support from the local community remains crucial for the rodeo’s sustainability. Sponsorship from businesses and individuals has allowed the event to thrive, with the 2022 rodeo being awarded the Australia Day Community Event of the Year for the local area. “The local community’s support is the backbone of this event,” Mr Rowson said. “Every dollar helps ensure we can maintain safety standards and enhance our facilities.” In recent years, the committee has also contributed to various local events, including sponsorship of the Jindabyne Lake Light Sculpture and support for the Moonbah Church project aimed at improving accessibility. Collaborations with likeminded locals, Russel Ritter and Michael and Kate Barry, the committee were able to help improve the entrance to the church. The entrance off the main road has received a new ramp, fencing and proper drainage that replaced an old drag gate. The ongoing maintenance of the rodeo complex alone costs around $20,000, a significant investment in ensuring the safety of both animals and spectators. “Maintaining a safe environment is our top priority,” Mr Rowson said. “We’re always looking for ways to improve and ensure that everyone has a great experience.” As the rodeo approaches, the call for sponsorship is more important than ever. Local businesses are encouraged to support this cherished event. Sponsorship not only helps the rodeo continue but also provides businesses with exposure, including free entry on the day, announcements throughout the event, and promotional opportunities.
