The Nimmitabel Remembrance Day ceremony, organised by the Nimmitabel Advancement Group, was one of many small community-attended ceremonies in Australia, and the world, to commemorate the sacrifice of all those who died or suffered in service of their nation.
Despite having four seasons in one morning, residents, councillors Narelle Davis and Andrew Thaler, Nimmitabel Public School students and members of community groups attended the service at the Nimmitabel cenotaph on Tuesday, 11 November.
The program began with a welcome from president Nimmitabel Advancement Group, Vickie Pollard, followed by the Prayer of Remembrance and a commemorative address delivered by Royal Australian Airforce Squadron Leader (retired) and Invictus Games silver and bronze medallist, Cindy Chawner.
Several wreaths were laid at the base of the cenotaph, The Ode of Remembrance was read by Mrs Pollard, followed by the sombre sounds of The Last Post, one minute's silence at 11am to honour those who gave their life in service and to remember the armistice - marking the end of fighting with Germany in World War I, and remembering those who have been involved in war since - and The Rouse.
"Poppies for our Heroes" was read by Cr Davis, "Symphony of Silence" by Nimmitabel CWA president, Leonie Thistleton, then four Nimmitabel Public School students eloquently read two verses - Fiona and Kara 'the Pledge of Remembrance' by Rupert McCall and Piper and Emilia 'The Inquisitive Mind of a Child' (author unknown) - the ceremony then closed with the national anthem.
Attendees were invited for a social morning tea of cakes, scones, sandwiches and savoury food, tea and coffee at the caravan park gazebo.
