The market saw a notable decline in cattle numbers at last week’s Wagga Wagga sale, influenced largely by a cheaper market the previous sale.

Despite this, the quality of cattle remains mixed, particularly with trade cattle in the 400-500kg range being in short supply.

A larger group of re-stockers was active in the market, with some hailing from the northern regions and others participating from Ballarat, alongside local buyers.

In the trade category, steers and heifers sold between 410-457c/kg.

The sale attracted many of the regular feedlot buyers, although not all operated.

Feeder steers weighing 330-400kg saw a modest gain of 6c, selling within the range of 440-518c/kg.

Meanwhile, feed steers in the 400-500kg bracket saw a significant lift in price of 14c, ranging from 405-505c/kg.

Feeder heifers, especially those sought from the north and southern regions of South Australia, contributed to stronger demand, prices increased by 10-16c, with medium weights making between 380-457c/kg.

In the export sale, not all buyers were actively pursuing cattle suitable for processors.

Heavy steers weighing 500-600kg slipped 7c, to sell from 398-480c/kg. On the other hand, bullocks gained 10c, with prices ranging from 396-455c/kg.

The decline in cow numbers prompted buyers to increase their bids for well-finished types, with heavy cows improving 4c, at prices from 370-402 c/kg.

Cows under 520kg also saw solid demand, making between 330-370 c/kg.

Store cows sold from 352-368c/kg.
